Mae CARWYN EVANS yn gweithio mewn cyfrwng cymysg,
ffotograffiaeth a gosodwaith. Mae’r rhan fwyaf o’i waith
yn ymwneud gyda’i synnwyr personol o le: 'Mae’r rhan fwyaf
o’m gwaith yn ymwneud â’m profiadau diwylliannol yng
ngefn gwlad Cymru. Rwy’n cwestiynu yr agweddau hynny sydd yn annatod
i iaith, cymdeithas a chymeriad ardal – agweddau y dylid eu diogelu
rhag distryw pellach.' (Evans).
Yn ystod yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn 2004 fe gafodd Carwyn ei gomisiynu
gan Cywaith Cymru i adeiladu fframwaith ar y maes . Roedd adeiladwaith
'Ar y Maes' yn cynnwys pedwar cynhwysydd allforio a oedd cynnal gosodweithiau
a oedd yn pwysleisio ar yr elfen symudol o fywyd presennol diwyllianol
yng Nghymru, ond eto'n gweithio fel cynwysyddion i weithiau celf, lleoliadau
ar gyfer arddangosfeydd a pherfformiadau impromtu, gan adlewyrchu natur
peripatetig yr Eisteddfod.
'Evans is deeply connected to a sense of Welsh speaking, Welsh Wales,
but is one of an increasing number of young people from such backgrounds
now ensconced in the once non-Welsh Wales city of Cardiff. This is the
cultural change he refers to, where a haemorrhaging of the young is
encouraged by a lack of creative enterprise and high house prices, an
increasing Welsh Wales presence in Cardiff and a diminishing of Welsh
spoken in the heartlands. Describing how it feels to be one of these
internal émigrés has become Carwyn's dominant theme in
recent work. In a characteristically economic piece from his degree
show in 2001 there is a reflection on cultural demise; a book is printed
with a photocopy of a family photograph, which gradually grows fainter
as it is repeated from page to page, until it disappears completely.'

Astudiodd Evans (g. 1979) yn Ysgol Gelf Caerdydd (1998-2001) ac mae'n
arddangos yn rheolaidd, gan amlaf yng Nghymru. Mae yn awr yn byw ac
yn gweithio yng Nghaerdydd.

CARWYN EVANS works in mixed media, photography and
installation. His work is concerned principally with issues related
to his individual sense of place: 'Most of my work deals with my own
cultural experiences. Its purpose is to question those aspects that
are inseparable to language, community and a region's character - aspects
that should be protected from further destruction.' (Evans).
Cywaith Cymru commissioned the artist to build a structure on the Eisteddfod
field in 2004. The resulting structure and the installations housed
within 'Ar Y Maes' were crea utilizing four large shipping containers,
emphasising the 'in-transit' nature of present day Welsh culture, but
also serving as containers for art-works, impromptu exhibition venues
and performance spaces, reflecting the nature of the peripatetic edifice
of the Eisteddfod itself.

In 2000 he was awarded the Young Artist Scholarship at the National
Eisteddfod of Wales and was the first recipient of the Ifor Davies award
in 2003 for work which was seen to convey 'the spirit of activism in
the struggle for language, culture and politics in Wales.'
Evans (b. 1979) studied Sculpture at Cardiff School of Art (1998-2001)
and has exhibited widely, principally in Wales. He now lives and works
in Cardiff.
